Gramophone Magazine names Eldar Nebolsin’s Chopin album in Top 50 Greatest Chopin Recordings List

Gramophone’s lists of the 50 greatest Mozart, Beethoven and Bach recordings have proved immensely popular so they are now proud to present 50 of the finest recordings of Chopin’s music. Eldar Nebolsin’s Concertos No. 1 and Fantasia on Polish Airs with the Warsaw Philharmonic and Antoni Wit appear second on this list.
” Nebolsin proves himself a scintillating and persuasive Chopinist, alive to every detail and, indeed, subtly highlighting a few that are generally ignored. No 1’s Rondo is the highlight of the disc, nonchalantly fleet-fingered, beautifully phrased and conveying a real joy of shared music-making. The Fantasia and Krakowiak are no less successful. ” Gramophone

“The Presidents Own” United States Wind Band premiere Gerard Schwarz’ Rudolf and Jeanette

On February 21, 2016 “The Presidents Own ” United States Wind Band, under the baton of Lieutenant Colonel Jason K. Fettig premiered the Wind Band version of Gerard Schwarz’ Rudolf and Jeanette. Originally written for chamber ensemble and premiered in Seattle in 2007, it was revised slightly in 2008 and orchestrated for large orchestra for it’s world premiere performance in Zagreb.

Gerard Schwarz composed this work in memory of his mother’s parents Rudolf and Jeanette Weiss, who, on January 26th 1942, were shot into an open grave at the concentration camp in Riga, Latvia. Rudolf was 60 and Jeanette was 54. His grandparents lived in Vienna and when their exit visa to come to the US was denied, their fate was sealed. He has composed this work as a tone poem, so that through music he can honor the grandparents I never knew.

As when he made the large orchestra version from the chamber version, he has made many revisions to create a new work for band. He is very grateful to LtCol Jason Fettig for presenting the premiere with “The Presidents Own” United States Marine Band and has dedicated the work to LtCol Fettig and the Marine Band.

I welcome you to enjoy this Live World Premiere Performance.

The Eastern Music Festival celebrates its 54th acclaimed season with Gerard Schwarz at its helm

Gerard Schwarz 1The Eastern Music Festival celebrates its 54th season of musical excellence with Gerard Schwarz at its helm as Music Director.

As this year’s five week Festival draws to a close over the weekend of August 1, we look at some of its highlights.

New this year is a Conductor Fellowship Program lead by Gerard Schwarz, Grant Cooper and Eric Garcia. Read more:

Also new this year is it’s inaugural Guitar Program lead by Jason Vieaux, Julian Gray and Kami Rowan. Read more:

Read about the exhilarating opening weekend:

Festival Orchestra Knocks ’em out of the Park with Diverse, Challenging Programs

Between Wednesday’s EMF opening event Friday’s youth program and Saturday’s diverse evening of old and new, the Eastern Music Festival was batting three-for-three for a stunning way to open the summer. …… It is hard to say anything more about the performance, simply because it was so earth-shatteringly good, to say anything further still wouldn’t do it justice. There is something magical happening in Greensboro right now, and it is all thanks to Gerard Schwarz and his daring programming. EMF has hit a home run with this first week of programs. One patron, leaving, said enthusiastically, “If tonight was this good, how can it get any better?” Read full review:

Read about the commissions and new work premieres:

An Evening of Great Romantic Music, “Neo-” and the Real Thing at EMF

In another fabulous concert, unique in both its programming and high level of performance, the Eastern Music Festival’s “Festival Orchestra,” under the direction of Gerard Schwarz presented an eclectic night of a mighty classic, a modern giant and a world premiere ….. For those who liked Diamond’s 4th Symphony, what was to come next was in many ways a continuation.  As part of a 10-year commission project, Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, in collaboration with the Eastern Music Festival, commissioned a new symphony from Lowell Leiberman (b. 1961). … Despite numerous attempts by Schwarz to bring the composer on stage, he chose to remain with the audience as they gave him a thunderous ovation. Read full review:

Gerard Schwarz Action 1Read about Gerard Schwarz’s leadership:
And now a word about Maestro Schwarz: It is a rare conductor that conveys the emotion, passion and inner life of the music, and still continues to do the basic work of his profession – show the beat and cue entrances. He clearly does both, thereby a constant reliable gauge for the interpretation and the mechanics. That, in large part, is why the already hugely talented members of this orchestra sound  so superb under Schwarz’s leadership. Tonight’s concert was a perfect example of musician, conductor, composer and soloist coming together so seamlessly, and, maybe most importantly, the realization that there will continue to be great new music created. above_beyond“Above and Beyond: Wind Band Classics,” features established classics such as Frederick Fennell’s edition of Percy Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy alongside Paul Creston’s festive Celebration Overture. In addition, the disc includes works by Copland, Bernard Rands and Samuel Barber. Schwarz’s Above and Beyond, was written specifically for the band in recognition of their remarkable musicianship.

The live performance “earned a raucous standing ovation,” according toDMV Classical Music blog. “…the massed woodwinds blend so well and make such an even sound that you could mistake them for a uniquely rich and seductive organ… the brass section matched what seemed to be dozens of distinct colors perfectly to each moment of music.” Speaking of Above and Beyond, DMV Classical Music said, “At times, conductor Schwarz seemed like a kid in a candy store, picking from each section the specific delights he wanted at any given moment…the melodies had a certain felicity, and Schwarz made canny use of the vast capabilities of the band.”

A prolific recording artist and proponent of American music, Schwarz’s total discography numbers more than 350 recordings on more than 11 labels—with over 100 being released by Naxos. Also a prolific and dynamic composer, Schwarz studied with such eminent composers as Paul Creston, Roger Sessions, Jacob Druckman, Milton Babbitt, Vincent Persichetti and Pierre Boulez and has created many acclaimed original works and arrangements of orchestral suites.

Peter Breiner Releases National Anthems of the World ( Complete ) 2013 Edition

8.201001Naxos releases the 2013 Edition of Peter Breiner’s National Anthem’s of the World ( Complete ) as a 10 CD set. Recorded with Peter conducting the Slovak Radio Symphony and Slovak State Phiharmonic, this is an extraordinary project and any other existing anthem collection does not come close, in completeness, quality of the research or the size of the orchestral forces used. Every time this album is updated and released, the reactions are always overwhelming—from uncountable press articles and radio/TV shows all the way to special archbishops’ blessings.

Peter adds his own words about the creation of this project:

peter-breiner-credit-bartolomej-cisar” When I started arranging and recording national anthems some 17 years ago, nobody expected the project would become so big and popular. In the meantime, it has been an important part of two Summer Olympics and numerous other sporting, cultural and social events. It’s hard to imagine the amount of time and work that has been invested into this endeavour, and it could not have been done without the incredible efforts and expertise of several anthem experts, all the musicians, but mainly without the extraordinary recording team that has been involved in this project from its beginning—sound engineer Otto Nopp and Ladislav Krajcovic. “

Gerard Schwarz is enjoying life after the Seattle Symphony

Gerard Schwarz Action 2By Bernard Jacobson for

There is, it would seem, life after stepping down from a 26-year music director’s post. Gerard Schwarz took his departure from the Seattle Symphony two years ago (though he is still associated with it as Conductor Laureate). That brief period has seen the release or reissue of more than 50 of his recordings ……. These activities in the CD field, however, are not by any means all that Schwarz has been engaged in. He has been busier than ever as a composer. And last August he brought together in New York the All-Star Orchestra, an assemblage of first-desk players and other outstanding instrumentalists from the finest American orchestras, for four days in which they recorded for television an extraordinary range of music …. read full article:

Peter Breiner conducts his own arrangements of Tchaikovsky Operatic Suites with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. Naxos May 2013 Release.

New 6-page template APeter Breiner has received considerable international acclaim for his recent arrangements of Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition and Debussy’s 24 Preludes, and his Tchaikovsky arrangements are further impressive examples of his art. He has already arranged The Seasons and Songs but here he turns to opera. With deftness and subtlety he has taken motifs from Tchaikovsky’s first opera Voyevoda to craft six richly scored movements, two of which have rôles for solo strings. The Queen of Spades was composed in 1890 and Breiner’s selections fully explore the music’s romance and drama in their new form.

Uncle Vanya a new Opera in 4 Acts is now complete and available for world premiere.

Written by Neal Thornton, directed by Sally Burgess, and designed by Charles Phu, Uncle Vanya brings together the acclaimed team who brought us Sonya’s Story in 2010 which was premiered to excellent reviews by critics who looked forward to the complete opera:

How best to transform Chekov’s Uncle Vanya into an opera ? The composer Neal Thornton has taken up the challenge …. The project grew out of a song that Thornton composed for his wife, mezzo-soprano Sally Burgess, on words from the play. Burgess has turned director, and her sensitive staging of the tender, concentrated drama helped to streamline and softly highlight its poetry as well as its sinewy online brand name cialis themes. The architect Charles Phu has created a striking set … ( and ) hats off to the two fabulous young singers who carried the show…. quite a tour de force, singing and acting with commitment and passion. The final opera will offer “Yelena’s Story” as part 1 …. The exceedingly high free viagra samples without purchase level of the whole team promises something special when the opera is complete. I look forward to it. Jessica Duchen Opera

Already world renowned for her earlier Sarasate, Piazzolla, and Rihm albums this album’s early reviews put Tianwa Yang at the forefront for interpretations of the Mendelssohn concertos:

In Tianwa Yang we find an artist of exceptional technique and musicianship. Above all, her tone, particularly at the extremes, achat cialis is heart-meltingly beautiful, so even what look on the page to be the dullest of scales and arpeggios take on a luminous glow. The E minor Concerto is unreservedly splendid: tasteful rubatos in the first movement, a purposeful flow in the second, captivating high spirits in the finale, and impeccable technique throughout. Roger Nichols BBC Music Magazine

Tianwa Yang’s bright violin solos trip delicately over the top of the orchestral texture, and she handles the speedy passages with a impressive lightness of touch. It would be easy to over-egg Mendelssohn’s soupy solos in the middle Andante movements, but Yang’s versions sound beautifully viagra pills for cheap fragile rather than indulgent. ClassicFM

Tianwa Yang and Nicholas Rimmer, piano release Violin and Piano Works by Wolfgang Rihm for Naxos.

International Record Review award it an OUTSTANDING in their upcoming issue.

Completely and utterly wonderful ! For me another hot candidate for our trophy “recording of the year”. Oh my, what a violinist is this Tianwa Yang ! With this CD she has surpassed herself: What a range of dynamics, what a true mastery of the instrument, even what a power to emotionally differentiate her musical expression ! The 1987 born virtuoso even now ranks among the global elite of violin virtuosi. Also her duet partner, German-British born Nicholas Rimmer, makes a sensational debut here for the Naxos label with his precise, sonorous piano playing. Most important though: Here are two musicians who appear to communicate instinctively with each other. Tianwa Yang and Nicholas Rimmer present a textbook recording of all included works – with out exception and with bravura ! Rainer Aschemeier The Listener.

Tasmin Little Releases New Album

Tasmin Little and Piers Lane release Strauss and Respighi Violin Sonatas on the Chandos label.

October 29, 2012

This release follows Tasmin Little’s highly acclaimed recordings of the Elgar and Delius Violin Concertos and Delius Double Concerto with Sir Andrew Davis and her recording of the Beethoven Triple Concerto with Howard Shelley.

Respighi is best known for his orchestral music, and Richard Strauss for both his orchestral music and operas, and therefore their chamber music has tended to take a back seat, however unfairly. On this disc they explore a few such neglected works, all of which display the full range of emotion, drama, harmonic exploration, and technical brilliance that characterised romanticism at its height.

Audio samples are available here on this site’s “listen” pages and the albums can be purchased from Amazon or Presto.

Tianwa Yang is awarded Diapason D’Or

Tianwa Yang is awarded Diapason D’Or for her 3rd Volume of Music for Violin and Piano by Sarasate released on the Naxos label

Tianwa Yang

Tianwa’s 2nd Volume in this series was also awarded a Diapason D’Or. American Record Guide stated ” I suppose Yang’s playing can only be described as perfect ” while Strings Magazine commented ” Yang has already demonstrated not only stunning, effortless virtuosity, but an uncanny affinity for Spanish music in a recording of Sarasate’s Spanish Dances. Here, her ability to capture the bel canto style—its meltingly beautiful sound, vocal fireworks, rhythmic flexibility, graciousness, and charm—is equally astonishing. Her double-stops are impeccably in tune, her runs glitter, her tone caresses the ear, and her expressiveness touches the heart without becoming sentimental or corny. ”
